Municipal Services

The Township of North Stormont is governed by a five-member Council consisting of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and three Councillors, elected by residents to represent the interests of the community. Council is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the municipality and overseeing a wide range of local services, including municipal roads and infrastructure, public water and wastewater systems, parks and recreation facilities, fire protection, building code enforcement, planning and development, by-law enforcement, economic development and community engagement and other services that contribute to the quality of life for residents and businesses. Regular Council meetings are typically held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month.

North Stormont is also one of six lower-tier municipalities that form the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG Counties). SDG Counties Council is composed of 12 members, with each municipality represented by its Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The six member municipalities are:
 

• Township of North Stormont
• Township of South Stormont
• Township of North Glengarry
• Township of South Glengarry
• Township of North Dundas
• Municipality of South Dundas

SDG Counties Council meets on the third Monday of each month and is responsible for delivering a range of regional services on behalf of all six municipalities. These services include county roads, regional coordination of economic development, paramedic services, long-term care, social housing, Ontario Works, land ambulance services, and other programs and infrastructure that support residents across the region.

Together, Township Council and SDG Counties Council work to provide the local and regional services that help keep North Stormont a vibrant, connected, and thriving community.

Economic Development and Community Engagement

The Township of North Stormont's Economic Development and Community Engagement Department works to strengthen our communities, support local businesses, and foster sustainable growth throughout the Township. The department serves as a resource for businesses looking to start, expand, invest, or remain in North Stormont by providing business support, connecting entrepreneurs with funding opportunities, and assisting with business retention and expansion initiatives. In addition to economic development, the department manages municipal grant programs, develops partnerships with community organizations, coordinates communications and marketing initiatives, and promotes programs, events, and services that enhance quality of life for residents. Through community engagement, strategic planning, and collaboration with local stakeholders, the department helps build a vibrant, resilient, and prosperous North Stormont for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Finance

The Finance Department oversees a variety of accounting and budgeting processes, including providing an annual balanced budget, tax billing, financial reporting and year end audits. The Finance Department monitors the annual budget and provides budget variances reports as a means of tracking and monitoring spending within the municipality. The Finance Department also invoices and collects water and sewer bills for the municipal water and sewer systems, and is responsible for the Township’s human resources, including benefits for Township employees.

Fire & Emergency Services
North Stormont Fire Services operates volunteer fire stations across the township, providing fire protection, prevention programs, and emergency response.

Waste Management
The township oversees curbside garbage collection, as well as landfill operations, to maintain a clean and healthy environment. The Recycle Coach app allows Township residents to view their garbage and recycling schedule, tips on how to improve in-home waste management, view special collection dates, set personalized reminders, and more.
