The Township of North Stormont is governed by a five-member Council consisting of the Mayor and four Councillors elected by residents to represent the community.** Township Council is responsible for local municipal services, including roads, water and wastewater systems, parks and recreation, fire protection, planning and development, by-law enforcement, and other services that directly support residents and businesses. Township Council generally meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month.
North Stormont is also one of six lower-tier municipalities that make up the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG Counties). SDG Counties Council consists of 12 members, with each municipality represented by its Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The six member municipalities are:
- North Stormont
- South Stormont
- North Glengarry
- South Glengarry
- North Dundas
- South Dundas
SDG Counties Council meets on the third Monday of each month to oversee regional services that are delivered across all six municipalities. These include county roads, economic development, paramedic services, long-term care, housing and social services, Ontario Works, land ambulance, and other upper-tier municipal responsibilities.
