NORTH STORMONT, ON – August 26, 2026 – The Township of North Stormont held its regular meeting of Council on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, with discussions focused on infrastructure, growth, community development and ongoing advocacy for the needs of rural municipalities.
Council Advocates for Highway 138 Safety at AMO Conference
In his opening remarks, Mayor François Landry highlighted Council’s recent participation in the 2026 Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Conference in Ottawa, where municipal leaders from across Ontario gathered to advocate for local priorities.
As part of the conference, MPP Nolan Quinn joined Council in a meeting with Ministry of Transportation Parliamentary Assistant Hardeep Singh Grewal and Deputy Minister McGregor to continue advocating for enhanced safety measures along Highway 138 between Highway 43 and Highway 417.
Mayor Landry also highlighted a meeting between Council representatives, Township staff and Parliamentary Assistant Rob Saunderson of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, where the Township advocated for a stable and predictable source of infrastructure funding to help rural municipalities build and improve the infrastructure necessary to support housing growth and economic development.
Supporting Infrastructure and Growth
Council continued its advocacy for sustainable infrastructure funding, with the Township supporting the continued doubling of the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF). The funding is particularly important to rural municipalities seeking to maintain existing infrastructure while also supporting growth and housing development. The Township’s previous resolution called for the increased OCIF allocation to become permanent beyond 2026.
Council also approved By-law No. 50-2026, formally accepting and dedicating lands associated with the Countryside Acres subdivision as public highway.
The meeting also included consideration of several planning and development matters, including the Countryside Acres subdivision and the Blanchard subdivision. These matters reflect the continued residential growth occurring throughout North Stormont. The Blanchard proposal, for example, involves zoning changes to facilitate a range of residential development and open-space uses.
Winter Maintenance Equipment
Council approved a transfer of up to $55,000 from the Fleet & Equipment Reserves to support the purchase of a used plow truck with plow and wing, as well as a new plow and wing for the Township’s recently purchased plow truck.
The investment will help ensure the Township’s Public Works Department has the equipment needed to maintain roads and provide winter services to residents.
Other Council Decisions
Council also considered a number of municipal administration, planning, emergency management, election and parking matters. These included the appointment of a Community Emergency Management Coordinator and alternates, the establishment of a Joint Compliance Audit Committee for the 2026 Municipal Election, and amendments to the Township’s Parking By-law.
By-law No. 51-2026 – Zoning By-law Amendment (File Z-2026-06) – Mills was deferred until the September 8, 2026 meeting of Council. The proposed amendment relates to lands on Minto Street in Finch and would permit the construction of a semi-detached dwelling.
Delegation Highlights
Council also welcomed Robert G. Mason of the Crysler Trail Bridge Committee, who appeared before Council to provide a presentation regarding the Crysler Trail Bridge. The delegation was included as the sole formal delegation on the August 25 Council agenda, with supporting presentation materials provided to Council for consideration.
The next regular meeting of North Stormont Council is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
